Cellcom purchased 700 MHz spectrum in north central Wisconsin on June 6th. This lower frequency spectrum will allow Cellcom to deliver new advanced services and features to customers in this geographic area as new technology becomes available.
President and CEO Pat Riordan said, “Cellcom is committed to serving rural areas. This recent purchase is an investment in our future plans for Rhinelander and the surrounding communities.”
Riordan notes the 700 MHz spectrum is ideal for rural markets. “The signal travels further, which means fewer towers are needed. Customers will maintain a strong signal for longer distances.”
Classified as lower frequency, the 700 MHz spectrum offers numerous advantages over the high frequency spectrum that is currently the standard for cellular service. Jim Lienau, vice president of corporate technical services and CTO, explains, “The signal produced by lower frequency spectrum has superior building penetration. This will allow customers to use their wireless phone inside a grocery store, their workplace or other businesses.” This spectrum also delivers enhanced data services. “Cellcom will be able to offer faster Internet access, texting, photo messaging, emailing and instant messaging to meet the consumer’s growing demand for these services,” Lienau notes.
The spectrum purchase will allow Cellcom to build out the Rhinelander network at a faster rate. “The lower the frequency, the fewer cell sites are needed to build a strong network and provide excellent coverage,” Lienau said. For every 700 MHz spectrum cell site that is built, it would take four or five high-frequency towers to cover the same number of square miles.
Areas that will benefit from the spectrum purchase include Vilas, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida, Taylor and Florence Counties.
The recent spectrum purchase underscores Cellcom’s commitment to serving Rhinelander and surrounding communities. “Whether you work or play in Rhinelander, you will have the wireless services you need and expect,” Riordan said.
Cellcom’s renowned network is customized to rural markets and customers. Cellcom is a sister company of Nsight Telservices and a subsidiary of Nsight, a provider of communications services throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, with more than 60 retail and agent locations.
